Farmers Market This Friday
We'll be under the pavilion this Friday from 11 to 2. Bert Ott will be doing his Americaners for Haiti fundraiser again. If you have a sweet tooth, these little cakes are for you - & if you don't, why not drop a buck in the till for a good cause. All proceeds go to the Red Cross Haiti relief effort.
We expect our usual vendors - meats, eggs, baked goods, jams, jellies, pecans....
See you at the market.

Information for new vendors
The market will hold an information session for new vendors on Saturday, February 13, from 10 to 11 in the basement of the Webb City Public Library, 101 South Liberty. You can pick up an application and our rules, see a good dvd on selling at a farmers market and ask questions.
All produce growers at the market MUST have attended a Food Safety: from field to market class in 2008, 2009 or 2010 in order to sell at the market this year. The 2010 class will be Saturday, February 27, in the American Legion basement room of Memorial Hall, 212 W 8th Street, Joplin. Use the east down ramp.
An English-only class will be held from 9 to Noon. The same class will be repeated from 1 to 5 with complete Hmong translation.

Tom Brokaw & farming responsibly
Our market meat vendors are very like the rancher profiled in this Tom Brokaw story. Click on the link below. The video screen is on the lower left hand part of the linked page.
Pay a visit to Jeff Downs' Farm and you'll come across cows grazing on tall grass, hogs rooting around in the pastures, and chickens clucking away in the fields. This may be how farming in this country used to look, but by today's agricultural standards, the Downs' Ranch is no ordinary American farm -- and owner Jeff Downs is no ordinary American farmer:

Chicken wings for the Super Bowl, anyone? - & herding cats!
All-natural beef and chicken rancher Nancy Rasmussen has just emailed to say that she will be bringing packages of chicken wings (6 to a package) to market this Friday on 2/5. It's an all-time favorite snack for Super Bowl watchers, including those of us who just watch for the ads - let's hope for some great ones. My favorite is Herding Cats:
